India Set to Become Asia-Pacific’s Second-Largest Data Centre Power Consumer by 2030

India’s data centres are expected to emerge as the second-largest electricity consumers in the Asia-Pacific region by 2030, overtaking countries such as Japan and Australia. The projection comes from newly released estimates by a research firm.

According to the report, electricity demand from data centres in India is forecast to grow nearly five times, from 13 TWh in 2024 to 57 TWh by 2030. This would account for 2.6 per cent of the nation’s total power generation, compared with the current share of 0.84 per cent.

The sharp rise in demand is being driven by the rapid growth of India’s digital economy, the large-scale rollout of artificial intelligence infrastructure, and the expansion of hyperscale cloud services.

Industry findings show that India already leads the Asia-Pacific region, excluding China, in total data centre capacity. The country is projected to add about 850 MW of capacity between 2024 and 2026, which is more than any other competitor in the region.

Several factors have contributed to India becoming a highly attractive destination for data centre investments. These include low electricity tariffs, government incentives, and steady improvements in renewable energy integration. Together, they have strengthened India’s position as the most competitive market in the region for building large-scale data centres with a focus on sustainable growth.

With these developments, India is expected to maintain its role as the fastest-growing data centre market in the Asia-Pacific while also becoming one of its top energy consumers throughout the decade.
