IIT Madras develops real-time indoor mapping technology

Wearing a sensor will soon allow first responders to map an unfamiliar indoor area when conducting search and rescue operations during a disaster. IIT-M researchers created a tool called Ubiqmap that uses radio frequency-based imaging, also known as radio tomographic imaging (RTI), to map an indoor space in real-time under any lighting or environmental circumstances. Because traditional infrastructure frequently fails during public safety events, the technology is essential for first responders during disaster relief operations, according to researchers.

RTI systems map surroundings using sensors or fixed wireless transceivers. These transceivers transmit radio signals to one another; the transmissions are weakened or dispersed by objects or humans. A computer reconstructs an image of the region after each transceiver records variations in the intensity of the received signal.

IITM’s technology tracks movement and automatically updates floor maps in real-time by using wearable transceivers on rescue workers. This helps with evacuation planning and efficient resource allocation by giving first responders precise interior maps, especially in low-visibility locations.
