IIT Madras Pravartak Technologies Foundation has successfully completed the training of its first cohort of Cyber Commandos, a program designed to equip law enforcement personnel with advanced cybersecurity skills. This initiative aims to enhance India’s cybersecurity framework and empower law enforcement agencies in their fight against cybercrime.
Launched by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, the Cyber Commandos program seeks to establish a specialized unit, marking a significant advancement in India’s cyber defense strategy.
A formal graduation ceremony for the 37 trained officers took place on April 1, 2025, at IIT Madras. The event was attended by notable figures, including Dr. Sandeep Mittal, IPS, ADGP (Cyber Crime Wing) of Tamil Nadu, Dr. Shankar Ram, CEO, and Mr. Balamurali Shankar, Chief Knowledge Officer of Pravartak.
Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, praised the officers for their achievements, highlighting that the training has equipped them with essential knowledge and practical skills. Ms. Roopa M, IPS, Director of the Threat Analytics Unit (TAU) at I4C, stressed the importance of having a proactive team to tackle sophisticated cyber threats.
The Cyber Commandos initiative, spearheaded by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, represents a strategic effort to enhance India’s cyber defense.
Unlike traditional cybercrime units that respond to incidents, the Cyber Commandos will take a proactive approach to prevent cyberattacks.
Dr. Sandeep Mittal highlighted the scale of cybercrimes, noting that India lost as much to cyberattacks in the last four years as it saved from Russian oil imports in just one year. She introduced plans for digital platforms aimed at assessing officers’ skills and providing refresher courses to support continuous learning.
The Cyber Commando program covered essential and advanced topics in cybersecurity, including network security, digital forensics, ethical hacking, and cyber threat intelligence. Participants received hands-on training through real cyber threats, live simulations, and legal aspects of cybercrime enforcement.
Cyber Commando initiative marks a significant step forward in enhancing India’s cyber resilience and ensuring that law enforcement agencies are well-prepared to tackle new digital threats.
