The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur has solidified its position as a national leader in the burgeoning fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and cloud computing.
The institution is not only pushing the boundaries of research but also significantly contributing to national defense capabilities and real-world applications of AI, particularly in critical sectors like healthcare and climate.
During the institute’s 71st convocation, Director Suman Chakraborty highlighted IIT Kharagpur’s commitment to “pushing boundaries” in these advanced technological domains. He emphasized a strong focus on responsible and human-centric AI, with a keen eye on its practical applications in areas ranging from virtual accident monitoring and wastewater engineering to next-generation wireless communication
A significant aspect of the institute’s work involves enhancing national defense. Through collaborations with the DRDO Industry Academia Centres of Excellence (DIA-CoEs), IIT Kharagpur is actively engaged in pioneering research in underwater robotics and cyber-physical defense systems.
The institute has expanded its footprint by collaborating with the Telangana government to establish an off-campus Centre of Excellence for AI, cybersecurity, defense, and aerospace in Hyderabad, aiming to train professionals and undertake industry and government projects.
The institution’s growing stature in the global academic landscape was recently recognized in the QS World University Rankings for 2026, where IIT Kharagpur secured the 4th position in India and climbed to 215th globally, marking a notable improvement. This recognition underscores its commitment to academic excellence, impactful research, and fostering innovation that aligns with national priorities.
As IIT Kharagpur approaches its Platinum Jubilee in 2026, it continues to reinforce its role as a pivotal hub for technological advancement, fostering both groundbreaking research and the development of talent crucial for India’s digital future and national security.
