The International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad has launched a state-of-the-art microfabrication and semiconductor characterisation facility called FabLab. The lab was officially inaugurated by the institute’s director, Professor P J Narayanan, and is supported by the Department of Science and Technology under the PURSE research excellence scheme.
The FabLab is designed to support the development of biosensors and bioactuators, particularly for healthcare applications. It houses advanced equipment such as UV lithography systems, sputtering units, spin coaters and vacuum chambers. The lab is also equipped with key characterisation tools including a scanning electron microscope, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and an optical profilometer.
The facility features semiconductor integrated circuit characterisation instruments like a probe station, vector network analyser, vector signal generator, signal analyser and oscilloscope. These tools are capable of handling high-frequency measurements in the millimetre wave range.
Dr Aftab Hussain, coordinator of the PURSE grant, stated that the FabLab will greatly enhance research in material science and very-large-scale integration at the institute. He also noted that the lab will offer access to these specialised tools for external researchers and startups in the region. One of the lab’s main goals is to help train skilled professionals in semiconductor fabrication and testing, with a focus on reducing dependency on imports.
The institute plans to organise workshops, certification programmes and hands-on training sessions for students, researchers and professionals. These initiatives aim to bridge the gap between academic research and practical industry requirements, while also contributing to the growth of India’s semiconductor and biosensor ecosystem.
The launch of this facility marks an important step in building India’s capabilities in chip manufacturing and applied research in biosensor technology.
