IGNOU Warns Students of Rising Fraudulent Schemes

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has issued a strong warning to students, urging them to stay alert against a growing number of scams targeting the academic community.

According to the university, there has been a rise in cases where fraudsters are pretending to be official IGNOU representatives. These scammers are using fake websites, emails, and messaging apps like WhatsApp to trick students into making payments. This alert comes at a time when cybercrime cases in India have jumped by 20% in 2025, as reported by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre.

In a detailed advisory shared on X earlier today, IGNOU made it clear that any official updates related to exams or evaluations will only be shared through the university’s verified channels. These include the official IGNOU website and authorized university email addresses.

The university has advised students to be cautious of any messages, links, or payment requests from unknown or unverified sources. Students are also being asked to report any suspicious communication immediately. This warning comes in the wake of several data breach incidents at educational institutions across the country, which have raised serious concerns about digital safety.

As part of its safety measures, IGNOU has introduced strict guidelines. Students are specifically warned not to make any payments through QR codes or payment links received via emails or social media platforms. Any such requests should be treated as suspicious.

For any doubts, issues, or clarification regarding payments or exams, students are encouraged to directly contact the university’s Student Evaluation Division. IGNOU stressed that using only official communication channels is essential to avoid falling prey to these scams.

The university’s latest move is part of a broader effort to protect students amid the rising threat of phishing and online frauds within India’s higher education sector.
