The Institute for Climate Change Studies (ICCS), located in Kottayam, has launched an advanced artificial intelligence-powered system named ‘Eye in the Sky’ ICCS Nowcasting System, aimed at delivering real-time and hyper-local rainfall forecasts.
As per an official announcement on Tuesday, the platform is capable of predicting rainfall with high accuracy up to two hours in advance. This innovation is designed to assist communities in preparing for sudden, intense rainfall events and will also support agencies such as the Disaster Management Authority by issuing timely alerts related to heavy rain and possible landslides.
To make the system more accessible, a mobile application is currently being developed. This app will allow the general public to receive instant weather updates and warnings on their devices.
The ICCS is set to present this project on August 7 at the upcoming Research and Development Summit hosted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) in Thiruvananthapuram.
Functioning under the KSCSTE, ICCS focuses on researching the effects of climate change across various sectors in Kerala, including the environment, river basins, and coastal areas. As part of its ongoing efforts to expand climate monitoring capabilities, the institute is also planning a collaboration with Kannur University. According to ICCS Director K. Rajendran, a memorandum of understanding will soon be signed to develop a mini-portable weather station.
