IBM to Support Maharashtra in Developing Quantum Computing Initiative

Global technology company IBM has announced its support for Maharashtra in building the state’s quantum computing initiative. The US-based company, which has a significant presence in the state, signed a letter of intent with the Maharashtra government to explore opportunities to strengthen the state’s quantum programme.

According to the agreement, IBM will provide its expertise to help the state design its quantum initiative and also contribute to the development of Maharashtra’s quantum ecosystem. This will include conducting workshops and skills development programmes aimed at building a strong pool of talent in the sector.

Highlighting the importance of the collaboration, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “Through our collaboration with IBM, we will harness quantum innovation to transform lives, while building a skilled talent pool to democratise its benefits and make them accessible to every citizen of the state.”

Hans Dekkers, General Manager for IBM Asia Pacific, described the collaboration as a commitment to support Maharashtra in creating a vibrant quantum ecosystem. IBM India and South Asia’s Managing Director, Sandip Patel, also welcomed the partnership and emphasised the company’s intent to work closely with the state government in advancing quantum computing skills.

Alongside this collaboration, Chief Minister Fadnavis inaugurated IBM’s new client experience centre in Mumbai. The facility is designed to support Indian enterprises in their adoption of artificial intelligence, hybrid cloud, and quantum computing.

The centre will function as a collaborative space where IBM experts and partners can co-create solutions tailored to address the challenges faced by businesses in India. It will showcase a wide range of solutions and services from IBM’s portfolio, including the watsonx platform, data and automation tools, cybersecurity, hybrid cloud, and consulting-driven digital transformation.

This partnership between IBM and Maharashtra underlines the state’s ambition to be a leader in emerging technologies, while also focusing on building talent and innovation for long-term growth. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s position in quantum computing and accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies across industries.
