While many companies remain cautious about directly attributing layoffs to artificial intelligence, IBM has openly acknowledged that AI—specifically chatbots—is playing a role in its workforce restructuring. The company has notably reduced its HR headcount, citing the automation of certain functions through generative AI.
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna had earlier stated that around 30% of non-customer-facing roles could be replaced by AI and automation over five years. This vision is now visibly shaping internal decisions, particularly within human resources.
An IBM spokesperson confirmed, “We are using AI to enhance operational efficiency, particularly in back-office functions like HR, where chatbots can now handle routine inquiries and tasks.”
The cuts come as part of IBM’s broader strategy to integrate AI into enterprise functions, from recruitment to performance reviews. While AI tools are not yet replacing all jobs, their growing role in handling repetitive and administrative tasks is prompting organizational changes.
Despite widespread adoption of AI, few firms have explicitly connected job cuts to the technology. Many companies opt for general terms like “restructuring” or “efficiency gains.” IBM’s transparency sets it apart, providing a glimpse into how AI is concretely reshaping corporate functions.
Industry analysts note that this could signal a turning point. “We’re likely to see more firms follow IBM’s lead as AI matures and cost-benefit metrics become clearer,” said one tech industry expert.
As businesses weigh the benefits of AI-driven productivity, IBM’s move reflects a shift toward AI-led transformation that is not only technological but also deeply organizational.
