In a key development for India’s human spaceflight programme, astronaut-designate P. Balakrishnan Nair has been promoted to the rank of Air Commodore in the Indian Air Force.
The promotion recognises his distinguished service as a test pilot and his critical role in India’s first crewed space mission, Gaganyaan, led by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
Air Commodore Nair is part of a select group of astronauts undergoing intensive training for the mission, which aims to send Indian crew members into low-Earth orbit. The elevation comes at a crucial time as preparations for the mission gather pace.
The Gaganyaan crew recently completed a high-altitude simulation exercise in Ladakh, known as Mission Mitra, as part of their training programme.
A highly experienced fighter pilot and test aviator, Nair has logged thousands of flying hours across multiple aircraft. His career reflects strong operational expertise, leadership, and adaptability—skills essential for human spaceflight.
Beyond training, he is also involved in mission planning, crew systems evaluation, and simulation exercises aimed at ensuring astronaut safety.
Nair previously served as a backup astronaut for the Ax-4 mission, which sent Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station.
India’s astronaut corps, trained in collaboration with international space agencies and domestic institutions, represents a major step in the country’s scientific and technological progress.
His promotion highlights the growing role of defence expertise in advancing space missions and strengthens coordination between the armed forces and the space sector.
As India moves closer to achieving independent human spaceflight, milestones like this underline the individuals driving the nation’s ambitions in space exploration.
