Hyderabad cybercrime unit cracks major digital arrest scam

A large scale online fraud targeting a city resident has been uncovered by cybercrime police, leading to arrests in Gujarat and the recovery of key financial links.

Hyderabad Cybercrime Police have busted a “digital arrest” fraud involving Rs 1.95 crore and arrested 2 men from Bhavnagar in Gujarat. The accused were identified as Saiyad Soyab Jahid Bhai and Belim Anas Rahim Bhai.

Police said the accused played a critical role in operating mule bank accounts used to receive and withdraw money obtained through fraud. The funds were later sent to cybercriminals based in Dubai using hawala channels.

The case came to light on December 13 after a woman filed a complaint stating that she received calls from unknown persons posing as government and telecom officials. The callers threatened her with a so called “digital arrest” and falsely claimed that her husband was involved in serious criminal offences.

By creating fear and pressure, the fraudsters forced the victim to transfer Rs 1.95 crore through RTGS, claiming it was required for verification and clearance of the alleged case.

During the investigation, cybercrime officials traced the money trail to bank accounts managed by the arrested accused. Police found that these accounts were linked to 22 cyber fraud cases reported across multiple states.

Transaction records revealed that nearly Rs 3.5 crore had moved through these accounts, pointing to a wider organised fraud network operating beyond state and national borders.

Officials said the arrests mark a major breakthrough in tracking the financial backbone of “digital arrest” scams, which rely on intimidation and impersonation to exploit victims.

The investigation is ongoing to identify other individuals involved in the network and to trace additional money transfers connected to the fraud.
