Huawei unveils smartwatch feature to flag early diabetes risk at 2026 World Health Expo

At the 2026 World Health Expo in Dubai, held from February 9 to 13, Huawei introduced a new health-focused feature for its smartwatches aimed at identifying early signs of diabetes risk. The company said the upcoming tool will help users monitor potential blood sugar-related concerns before serious issues develop.

According to Huawei, it is advancing a ‘blood sugar management’ feature built on non-invasive technology. The goal is to improve awareness of diabetes risk factors through wearable devices without requiring medical procedures.

The feature is based on PPG technology, short for Photoplethysmography. Huawei plans to use advanced sensors in its smartwatches to detect subtle changes in PPG signals. By analysing these variations, the system will generate proactive wellness alerts related to possible blood sugar fluctuations.

Explaining the intent behind the feature, Huawei said:

“This function is designed to raise awareness of possible blood sugar-related trends and encourage users to seek early medical consultation, rather than deliver medical diagnoses.”

Earlier reports had suggested that Huawei was preparing a dedicated blood sugar smartwatch for 2026. The latest announcement indicates that the company is focusing on rolling out a specialised feature instead.

Huawei also shared details of its recent research into diabetes-related health conditions. The company studied mechanisms such as neuropathy and high-end microvascular arteriosclerosis. Based on these findings, it developed a wellness function capable of detecting blood sugar fluctuations through continuous PPG data analysis from wearable usage.

To use the feature, users need to wear the smartwatch consistently for 3 to 14 days. After collecting sufficient data, a dedicated Diabetes Risk app will categorise results into Low, Medium, or High risk levels. Those falling in the medium or high range are advised to undergo professional medical testing for further evaluation.

Huawei confirmed that the feature will be rolled out to compatible smartwatches via an OTA update in the coming months. It is already available on the Watch GT 6 Pro and is expected to expand to more models soon.
