Huawei tests 950PR AI chip as demand rises amid US restrictions

Amid shifting global chip dynamics, Huawei is moving ahead with its new AI processor, the 950PR, positioning it as a domestic alternative for companies affected by restrictions on foreign technology.

The company began testing the 950PR in January by sending samples to partners. Mass production is expected to start in April 2026, with shipments planned for the second half of 2026. The chip is already gaining attention from major companies such as ByteDance and Alibaba.

The launch comes at a time when US restrictions have limited access to certain NVIDIA chips in China. Huawei is positioning the 950PR as a reliable local option for firms that require high-performance AI computing.

The 950PR offers faster speeds and improved CUDA compatibility compared to Huawei’s previous model. While the upgrades are described as incremental, the chip is designed to handle real-world AI tasks, especially inference workloads.

Huawei plans to ship 750,000 units of the 950PR this year. The chip is expected to be priced between 50,000 and 70,000 yuan, which is approximately $6,900 to $9,660.

The focus on inference aligns with current market needs, as companies look for efficient solutions to deploy AI models at scale. This also comes as NVIDIA faces challenges in maintaining sales momentum in China due to regulatory restrictions.

With growing demand for AI infrastructure, Huawei’s new chip could play a key role in supporting domestic technology development and reducing reliance on foreign hardware.
