Huawei Launches Second-Generation Mate XTs Trifold Smartphone

Huawei has introduced its second-generation trifold smartphone, the Mate XTs, on September 4. The device, priced at around $2,520 (approximately Rs 2.22 lakh), follows last year’s Mate XT, which was the first to feature a trifold design.

Unlike traditional foldable phones that use a single hinge, the Mate XTs is built with two hinges. When fully unfolded, it transforms into a tablet-sized display, offering a larger screen for multitasking. The phone runs on HarmonyOS 5.1 and is positioned as a productivity-focused device, with PC-like functions that allow users to stack, resize, and move windows across the screen. Reports also suggest the phone is powered by a 5,600 mAh battery.

The first Mate XT, launched in China last year and later in select global markets in 2024, proved to be a commercial success. According to industry data, Huawei sold 470,000 units by the end of the second quarter of this year, generating over $1.3 billion in revenue.

Huawei has also strengthened its position in its home market. In the second quarter of 2025, the company achieved an 18 per cent share of China’s smartphone market, up from 15 per cent last year. Within the foldable phone category, Huawei dominates with a 75 per cent market share.

Speaking on the strong market response, an industry analyst said: “The performance is forceful considering it’s one of the most expensive smartphones available, and this shows there is a demand for something innovative.”

The launch of the Mate XTs also reflects Huawei’s determination to showcase its innovation despite the restrictions placed by US sanctions in 2020, which limited access to vital software and semiconductors. Since then, the company has accelerated work on its own operating system and hardware, using models like the Mate XTs to demonstrate its resilience and ambition in the global smartphone sector.
