How To Switch Back To The Old Google Phone Dialer On Android Smartphones

Google recently rolled out a new update for its Phone app on Android devices, bringing a refreshed UI with Material Design 3 elements, new gestures, and an altered call interface. However, the changes have not been welcomed by many users.

The new design has frustrated a large number of people as it disrupts years of muscle memory, leading to accidental call drops, confusion while answering calls, and limited quick access to contacts. For older users or those less familiar with technology, this change has proven especially difficult.

Social media platforms quickly filled with complaints and memes highlighting the issues with the redesigned dialer. Many users found the update less intuitive and more complicated compared to the familiar old interface.

If you are facing the same issues or want to help your parents and family revert to the older, more comfortable dialer design, here is a simple step-by-step guide.

Steps To Revert To The Old Google Phone UI:

Open the Google Play Store app on your phone and tap on your profile icon. Head to Settings > Network preferences > Auto-update apps, then select “Don’t auto-update apps” to stop the dialer from updating automatically.

Search for the Google Phone app on the Play Store, open it, and tap “Uninstall updates.” This will bring back the factory version with the old UI.

Before opening the app, go to your phone’s Settings > Apps > Phone > Storage and clear both cache and data.

Once done, the app will load with the older layout and gestures that users are more comfortable with.

For those who use smartphones that already include a secondary dialer app provided by the manufacturer, another option is to set that app as the default Phone app. This avoids the need to disable auto-updates, which is generally not recommended for security reasons.

With these steps, users can bring back the familiar experience of the old dialer while avoiding the frustrations of the new Google interface.
