How Intelligent Is Your Artificial Intelligence?

Nearly a quarter of responses from leading AI systems can contain inaccuracies in complex tasks, according to recent independent evaluations. Even in controlled benchmarks, advanced models continue to produce answers that are incorrect or difficult to verify. Yet these systems are now part of everyday decision-making, used at a scale that quietly amplifies both their usefulness and their flaws. The contradiction is hard to miss, the more articulate artificial intelligence becomes, the easier it is to mistake articulation for accuracy.

Artificial Intelligence today drafts emails, assists with legal reasoning, suggests medical information, and pulls together knowledge with remarkable ease. Its responses are clear, structured, and often persuasive. But clarity is not the same as understanding, and persuasion is not proof of truth. The unease around AI is not really about what it can do, it is about how subtly it can get things wrong.

This concern is no longer theoretical. In 2023, a U.S. federal court sanctioned lawyers who submitted a legal brief generated using ChatGPT that cited cases which did not exist. The episode was widely reported, not because it was unusual, but because it revealed how easily fabricated information can pass as credible when it is presented well. Evaluations of widely used systems, including ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, have repeatedly surfaced similar issues, incorrect citations, factual distortions, and responses that favour coherence over accuracy. Benchmarks such as TruthfulQA show that these models often reproduce common misconceptions, reflecting the limits of the data they are trained on.

The explanation lies in how these systems work. Large Language Models do not understand information in the way people do, they generate responses by recognising patterns across vast amounts of data. That data is extensive, but it is not perfect. It can be outdated, uneven, and shaped by existing biases. AI systems do not just process knowledge, they inherit its gaps.

What complicates matters further is the way these systems present information. They tend to offer a single, confident answer, even when the situation calls for nuance or uncertainty. In human reasoning, hesitation often signals care. In AI, its absence can create a false sense of certainty. For many users, especially those without domain expertise, that distinction is not always easy to spot.

Bias, too, remains a persistent concern. Studies examining outputs from major AI systems have found differences in how responses are framed across questions involving gender, ethnicity, or geopolitics. These are not always obvious, but they appear in tone, emphasis, and omission. When systems like these are used to summarise, recommend, or interpret, such patterns can quietly shape perception.

So, is AI truly intelligent? In some ways, clearly yes. It can process information at speed, recognise patterns at scale, and produce language that feels natural and coherent. But intelligence, in a fuller sense, also involves judgment, context, and a sense of responsibility towards truth. Those qualities remain distinctly human.

The more immediate challenge, however, is not the technology itself, but how readily it is trusted. As AI becomes embedded across industries, there is a growing tendency to accept its outputs at face value, particularly when they are delivered with confidence. In areas such as cybersecurity, finance, or healthcare, this creates real risk. A small error, when repeated or scaled, can have consequences far beyond its source.

A more grounded approach is needed. Artificial Intelligence works best as a support system, not a substitute for human judgment. Its outputs are useful starting points, but they still require scrutiny. Alongside adoption, there is a need to build familiarity, so that users understand not just what AI can do, but where it may fall short.

The conversation around AI often swings between excitement and concern. The reality sits somewhere in between. These systems are powerful, but they are not infallible. They can assist, but they cannot be left unquestioned.

The question is no longer whether AI will influence decisions, it already does. The real issue is whether those decisions are examined, validated, and owned by people who understand the stakes.

In the end, Artificial Intelligence will not fail or succeed on its own terms. It will reflect the discipline, oversight, and judgment we choose to apply to it.
