In a country where air travel often feels like an exhausting ordeal, Digi Yatra is working to change the status quo. Long queues, tedious security checks, and multiple identity verifications—issues that plague Indian airports—are now being tackled by a groundbreaking initiative backed by facial recognition technology.
Digi Yatra, led by Suresh Khadakbhavi, the CEO of Digi Yatra Foundation, is pioneering a system that promises smoother, faster, and safer travel experiences. Launched two years ago under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, Digi Yatra has already streamlined airport procedures, allowing travelers to upload their photos and boarding passes to the app, ensuring swift and seamless entry into airports and through security checks.
But what truly sets Digi Yatra apart is its commitment to privacy. While some critics voice concerns over data handling, Khadakbhavi emphasizes the system’s adherence to Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI). This means your personal data stays in your hands, and verification happens directly on your device. “Validation can happen right on your device. No central authority needs to get involved,” Khadakbhavi explains. The system doesn’t store personal information—everything is deleted within 24 hours of travel.
Digi Yatra’s journey began in 2017 with a pilot at Bangalore Airport. Over the years, Aadhaar-based checks evolved into a selfie-based system. With support from key figures like Nandan Nilekani, the Digi Yatra Foundation was officially established in 2019. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the platform finally took off, with help from Indian startups and open-source solutions like Hyperledger.
Today, Digi Yatra operates in 24 airports and is expanding rapidly. By using advanced NIST-approved algorithms and implementing sophisticated liveness detection, the system ensures passengers can’t fool the technology with a simple photo. It’s also designed to adapt to various environments, solving problems like poor lighting with innovative camera setups.
One of the most compelling aspects of Digi Yatra is its flexibility. It’s not tied to specific hardware, ensuring a broad range of vendors can participate, keeping costs low and encouraging competition. Adhering to global standards for face recognition and security, the system is poised for further expansion, both within India and abroad.
Despite its growth, Digi Yatra remains a not-for-profit initiative, focused on creating what Khadakbhavi calls the “travel stack of India.” Looking ahead, the team plans to extend its services to hotels, allowing a seamless, ID-free check-in experience. International expansion is also on the horizon, with discussions underway to bring the service to Europe.
“One influencer even made a reel saying he rejected Digi Yatra—with his face all over Instagram,” Khadakbhavi chuckles, highlighting the contradictions in privacy concerns. The system is entirely voluntary, with only flight details and a selfie required for registration. As Khadakbhavi puts it, “Airports already have cameras everywhere—what exactly are we doing that’s new or scary?”
