Honor has released a teaser video showcasing a futuristic smartphone concept that features a gimbal-mounted pop-up camera, sparking interest across the tech community. The 2-minute and 40-second video, shared on the company’s YouTube channel on Thursday, hints at a new direction for smartphone design by integrating robotics and artificial intelligence.
At first glance, the phone looks like a regular smartphone. However, the back reveals a unique camera mounted on a robotic arm that swings out, similar to a DJI Osmo gimbal. While the teaser video appears AI-generated, Honor confirmed that the device is real and that more details will be revealed at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next year.
Pop-up cameras are not new, as brands like Asus and Oppo have previously introduced devices with flip or rotating camera modules to offer full-screen displays. But Honor seems to be taking the idea further. Instead of focusing solely on aesthetics, the company appears to be creating a smartphone that combines robotics and AI to interact intelligently with its surroundings.
In the concept video, the camera can analyse a user’s outfit and even play peekaboo with a baby while lying flat on a desk. According to Honor, the goal is to transform smartphones into “emotional companions that sense, adapt, and grow with their users.” The device, which remains unnamed, represents a shift towards more self-aware technology capable of acting autonomously.
This innovation aligns with a broader trend in the tech industry, where companies are increasingly experimenting with personal robotics powered by AI. Apple is reportedly working on a home robot that follows users and a tabletop device with a movable display. Amazon also attempted to enter this space with Astro, a home robot priced at $1,600, though it did not perform well commercially.
With smartphone innovation slowing and global sales flattening, companies like Honor are exploring new ways to reignite consumer interest. By merging AI, robotics, and mobile technology, Honor’s upcoming device could signal the beginning of a new era in smartphone evolution.
