HMD has introduced the Terra M, a rugged hybrid device designed for military personnel, law enforcement, first responders, and infrastructure operators working in harsh conditions. The phone blends feature phone simplicity with smartphone capabilities, focusing on durability and practical use in extreme environments.
The Terra M combines a physical keypad with a 2.8-inch touchscreen running Android-based Smart OS 14. Both the keypad and display are engineered for use with gloves or wet hands, thanks to enhanced touch sensitivity. This allows users to operate the device without removing protective gear.
The handset is built for military-grade durability. It features TPU bumpers that protect against drops of up to 6 ft (1.8 m). It operates in temperatures ranging from -13 °F (-25 °C) to 131 °F (55 °C). With IP68 and IP69K ratings, the device can withstand water immersion up to 5 ft (1.5 m) for 30 minutes and resist high-pressure water jets. It is also resistant to gasoline and solvents.
The Terra M exterior includes a lanyard loop and dedicated physical buttons for push-to-talk and emergency functions. The 2,510-mAh battery is user-replaceable by unscrewing the rear panel and offers up to 10 days of standby time.
The Terra M comes with 2 GB RAM and 32 GB storage, expandable via microSD up to 1 TB. It features an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 100-dB loudspeaker, a 3.5-mm audio jack, a red LED flashlight, and pogo pins for docking and charging.
HMD positions the device for enterprise use across hospitals, airports, and construction sites. It will launch in Europe, starting with the UK at £180 ($245), followed by Germany and France.
The Terra M stands apart from consumer rugged phones by prioritizing essential tools and secure communication for demanding professional settings.
