According to the Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Deel, global companies are changing how they hire as immigration rules tighten in the US and Europe and wage gaps continue to widen. Instead of relocating workers, many firms are now building distributed teams across regions where skilled talent is available.
“Even if immigration tightens, the need to hire doesn’t go away. If companies can’t bring the best people in the world to them, they will go to where the talent is,” Alex Bouaziz said in an interview with a business publication. “Instead of moving people to the Bay Area, companies are opening offices in India, Latin America, Eastern Europe.” He added that remote hiring has become a strategic necessity rather than a cost saving tool.
Founded 6 years ago, Deel has grown into one of the fastest expanding enterprise software as a service firm. It competes with global payroll and HR players such as ADP, Rippling, Darwinbox and Zoho. The company has crossed $1 billion in annual recurring revenue and serves over 40,000 customers across nearly 150 countries. Backed by investors including Andreessen Horowitz and Coatue Management, Deel was valued at $17 billion during its Series E funding round in October. The platform enables global hiring through payroll, compliance and employer of record services without the need for local entities.
India has emerged as a key market for Deel, both for talent and operations. Bouaziz said the company employs more than 1,000 people in India and is preparing to launch a local payroll engine to meet labour and tax compliance needs. He noted that rising demand for AI skills is accelerating global hiring, as wage inflation in US tech hubs makes local recruitment difficult. “Small and mid-sized companies just cannot compete with Bay Area salaries for AI engineers,” he said. “Remote hiring is no longer about saving money; it’s about accessing talent that would otherwise be unavailable.”
Bouaziz also said AI is reshaping jobs, especially at the entry level. “AI will eliminate some junior roles, there’s no denying that,” he said, while adding that younger workers adapt quickly. “In 2 or 3 years, a 22-year-old who is fluent in AI tools may outperform someone with 10 years of experience who hasn’t adapted.” Deel currently operates 55 local payroll engines and plans to expand this to 100 over the next 5 years, while staying focused on execution beyond its $1 billion revenue milestone.
