Himax Technologies, Tata Electronics, and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) have signed (MoU) to enhance country’s display and ultralow power AI sensing market

Himax Technologies, Tata Electronics, and Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) have inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand the display and ultralow power AI sensing market in India, marking a significant milestone for the semiconductor industry. This partnership, which was revealed at the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association’s (IESA) Vision Summit 2025 in Gandhinagar, is expected to strengthen India’s standing as a world leader in semiconductor production.

Strengthening India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem

The three businesses’ dedication to fostering research and creating next-generation display semiconductor solutions is reaffirmed by the agreement. The partnership supports India’s “Made in India” campaign by combining knowledge in chip design, production, and packaging, strengthening supply chain resilience, and establishing India as a vital hub for semiconductor manufacturing.

The construction of a state-of-the-art display manufacturing facility in Dholera, Gujarat, would be led by Tata Electronics, a division of Tata Sons. It is anticipated that this action would greatly improve India’s semiconductor infrastructure, lowering dependency on imports while meeting demand both domestically and internationally. India’s strengths in advanced semiconductor design are enhanced by Himax Technologies, a pioneer in display semiconductor technology, which contributes its own WiseEyeTM ultralow power AI sensing technology to the collaboration. As a major participant in the semiconductor manufacturing industry, PSMC will contribute its fabrication and chip production experience, guaranteeing the creation of high-quality semiconductors.

Industry Impact and Growth Prospects

This strategic alliance has the potential to change the semiconductor industry in India in a number of ways:

  1. Boosting Local Manufacturing – By increasing local semiconductor production, the partnership seeks to lessen India’s dependency on international supply chains and increase its independence in the creation of cutting-edge electronics.
  2. Expanding AI and Display Semiconductor Applications – The collaboration will make it possible to create cutting-edge solutions for next-generation display technologies and ultralow power AI sensing, serving a variety of markets including consumer electronics, automotive, and industrial automation.
  3. Enhancing Global Competitiveness – This project will establish India as a major participant in the global semiconductor supply chain, drawing in further investments and promoting R&D developments by utilizing the country’s quickly expanding electronics ecosystem.
  4. Job Creation and Economic Growth – It is anticipated that the construction of the new manufacturing facility in Gujarat would create job opportunities for workers of all skill levels, promoting India’s workforce development and economic expansion.
  5. Advancing the ‘Made in India’ Vision – The agreement supports India’s goal of becoming a worldwide center for electronics production and is in line with its semiconductor mission. It also opens the door for more technology partnerships and exports.

    Executive Insights

Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD of Tata Electronics, highlighted the transformative potential of this collaboration: “By combining Tata Electronics’ capabilities with Himax’s unparalleled expertise in display semiconductors and WiseEye™ ultralow power AI sensing, along with PSMC’s proven manufacturing solutions, we are creating a powerful ecosystem that caters to the evolving demands of the semiconductor industry.”

Jordan Wu, Co-Founder and CEO of Himax Technologies, expressed enthusiasm about India’s emergence as a key hub for electronics manufacturing. “Through this collaboration, we aim to bring our industry-leading expertise in display semiconductors and AI sensing technologies to support India’s ‘Made in India’ initiative while enhancing global supply chain resilience.”

Martin Chu, President of PSMC, emphasized the potential of the partnership: “This alliance provides an opportunity to expand our footprint and capture a significant share in both domestic and international display semiconductor markets.”

    A Catalyst for Future Growth

Following the Union Cabinet’s approval of Tata Electronics’ semiconductor fab project in collaboration with PSMC, which involved an investment of Rs 91,000 crore, this relationship builds upon the company’s ongoing efforts to increase India’s semiconductor capabilities. It is anticipated that the plant would generate 50,000 wafer starts per month (WSPM), bolstering India’s semiconductor industry even further.

The Himax-Tata Electronics-PSMC partnership paves the way for previously unheard-of expansion and innovation in the electronics industry as India works to establish itself as a semiconductor powerhouse. This strategic cooperation will be essential in shaping the future of India’s semiconductor sector as the nation accelerates its semiconductor mission, opening the door for technical improvements and increased global competitiveness.
