In a move aimed at restoring classroom discipline and sharpening academic focus, the Himachal Pradesh government has announced a statewide ban on mobile phone use by students in schools.
Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said the prohibition will apply to all government and private schools across the state and will take effect from March 1, 2026. The announcement was made at the closing ceremony of the 69th National School Games held in Ghumarwin, Bilaspur district, attended by students, teachers, and officials from across the country.
Focus on discipline and learning
The chief minister said the decision is part of the state’s effort to deliver world-class education and create a learning environment that helps students compete globally. He announced that students found carrying mobile phones will face a fine of ₹500, and the device will be confiscated. Parents will also be required to attend mandatory counselling sessions at the school.
To ensure consistent enforcement, the Education Department has been directed to frame a Standard Operating Procedure to deal with repeat violations. “We have observed that the use of mobile phones during school hours and even lunch breaks diverts students from studies and hampers their social development,” Sukhu said.
Recalling his own education in government schools, the chief minister said improving the quality of schooling remains a personal priority.
Sports push and infrastructure plans
At the event, Sukhu also highlighted the state’s focus on promoting sports and sports tourism. He announced employment opportunities for women athletes from Himachal Pradesh who recently represented India at the Asian Games. He also declared a cash award of ₹20 lakh for the state’s Under-19 girls’ handball team, which won the national championship.
The chief minister outlined key infrastructure initiatives, including the completion of the indoor stadium at Ghumarwin and a local school building within 1 year. He also announced plans for a new girls’ hostel at Morsingi.
The tournament concluded with Himachal Pradesh winning the gold medal after defeating Rajasthan in the final, while Haryana secured the third position. Around 30 teams from across the country took part in the championship.
