A lawsuit linked to President Donald Trump has put the spotlight back on tensions between the United States and Europe over free speech and tech regulation. The case was filed after a British campaigner was barred from entering the US, a move that has sparked legal and political backlash.
Imran Ahmed, a British national and head of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate, has sued the administration of President Donald Trump over a US entry ban. Court filings made public on Wednesday describe the move as an “unconstitutional” effort to force out a permanent American resident. Ahmed leads an organisation known for tracking and challenging online misinformation.
The case follows a decision by the US State Department, which announced on Tuesday that 5 European figures linked to technology regulation would be denied visas. According to the department, these individuals had tried to “coerce” social media platforms based in the US into suppressing views they disagreed with. Ahmed was named among those affected by the restriction.
The decision triggered sharp reactions across Europe. The European Union and several member states strongly criticised the visa ban, calling it an attack on Europe’s ability to regulate the digital space. Officials said they would stand firm in defending Europe’s regulatory independence and its right to set rules for online platforms operating within its borders.
The lawsuit adds a legal dimension to an already tense dispute between Trump’s US authorities and European voices pushing for stricter oversight of large technology companies. While the administration has framed the visa denial as a defence of free expression, critics argue it undermines democratic values and targets individuals for their professional work. The court case is expected to draw close attention on both sides of the Atlantic.
