A major step has been taken toward wider adoption of Huawei’s desktop operating system after it secured a high-level national security certification for use in official and enterprise environments.
China’s Information and Security Evaluation Center has released its 2026 security and reliability evaluation results. The list includes HarmonyOS v1.0 for PC. The operating system achieved Level II certification, the highest security and reliability grade awarded so far. It is also the first operating system to move beyond Level I. No other PC or server operating system has reached Level II certification.
The Level II rating confirms that HarmonyOS v1.0 PC OS meets stricter standards for security, control, and long-term stability. It also highlights stronger protection against external risks and dependence on foreign technologies. This makes the system more suitable for use in government bodies, key industries, and state-owned enterprises, where trust, safety, and supply stability are critical.
HarmonyOS is a self-developed operating system from Huawei. It was first launched for smartphones and tablets. Over the past 5 years, the platform has expanded to support smartwatches, wearables, third-party devices, and smart home products. This growth reflects major progress in cross-device compatibility.
Until recently, Huawei continued to use Microsoft Windows for its notebooks. This changed in 2025, when the company shifted from foreign software to its own HarmonyOS PC operating system. The software made its debut on the MateBook Pro series.
Huawei is also improving HarmonyOS for large-screen devices such as desktop computers. The goal is to support more usage scenarios beyond Huawei’s own hardware ecosystem.
The new national security certification is expected to strengthen confidence in HarmonyOS PC and accelerate its adoption across government offices and other high-security sectors. It also positions the operating system as a serious alternative in environments that demand strict security and independent technology control.
