A major growth milestone has been reached by Huawei as its homegrown operating system HarmonyOS has now attracted 8 million developers since its launch in 2019. The achievement was confirmed in the company’s recently released 2024 to 2025 sustainability report.
The report also highlights strong support from the education sector. More than 400 universities across China now offer HarmonyOS related studies, while over 320 campuses have introduced dedicated courses focused on the platform. Huawei has also pushed developer awareness through its HarmonyOS Academy, which has enrolled over 7.32 million students so far.
HarmonyOS was created after Huawei faced restrictions following the United States ban. In its early phase, the operating system was supported by an open source Android library to ensure existing apps could continue to work. Huawei initially used its EMUI apps to run on HarmonyOS so that Android apps could operate smoothly without placing pressure on developers during the transition.
Over the last five years, HarmonyOS has expanded far beyond smartphones. It now powers tablets, smart TVs, personal computers, wearable devices, smart home products, third party devices, smart cars, and enterprise solutions. At present, the ecosystem is fully active within the Chinese market.
The next stage of its evolution arrived with HarmonyOS NEXT, which focuses on native applications. This shift is aimed at improving speed and delivering a smoother user experience compared to earlier versions of the system. Huawei has partnered with leading Chinese industry players and developers to strengthen the ecosystem and launch a wide range of native apps for users.
Huawei Executive Director and Chairman Yu Chengdong recently shared another key update, confirming that the number of HarmonyOS powered devices has crossed 25 million units. He also stated that the software is now seeing around 144000 installations every day.
With strong developer participation, academic support, and growing device adoption, HarmonyOS continues to emerge as a powerful independent operating system ecosystem.
