Russia-linked hackers target Signal and WhatsApp accounts in global cyber espionage campaign

A new cyber warning from European intelligence agencies highlights a sophisticated hacking campaign targeting users of encrypted messaging platforms. Authorities say Russia-linked groups are attempting to compromise accounts on Signal and WhatsApp used by government officials, military personnel, and journalists.

Investigators say the attacks rely heavily on social engineering rather than technical vulnerabilities. Hackers impersonate app support teams or technical chatbots and convince users to reveal security verification codes or PIN numbers. Once these codes are obtained, attackers can take control of the account and access private messages, group chats, and other sensitive information.

Officials warn that the objective is not only account takeover but also access to confidential communications, diplomatic discussions, and information related to journalistic sources.

Cybersecurity experts say one of the most common tactics involves fake “Signal Support” chatbots. In these cases, attackers send messages claiming there is a security issue or verification problem with the user’s account. Victims are then asked to share a 6-digit verification code or security PIN. Some messages also warn that the account could be blocked if the code is not provided immediately. Once the code is shared, hackers can log in and take control of the account.

Investigations also reveal misuse of the Linked Devices feature in messaging apps. In this method, users receive a link or QR code and are asked to scan it to verify their account. If they follow the instructions, the attacker’s device becomes linked to the victim’s account, allowing them to read messages without needing the password. This can expose private chats, shared files, and group conversations.

Authorities say certain warning signs may indicate a compromised account. For example, a contact appearing twice in the contact list or a known number showing up as a “deleted account” could suggest that the account has been breached.

Experts note that although messaging apps use end-to-end encryption, their security can still be weakened if users are manipulated through social engineering. Cybercrime expert and former IPS officer Triveni Singh said attackers increasingly exploit human behaviour instead of relying only on technical hacking methods.

The campaign has reportedly targeted journalists and government officials in multiple countries. If journalists’ accounts are compromised, confidential sources could be exposed. In the case of government officials, sensitive diplomatic or security discussions could also be at risk.

Due to these concerns, European authorities have issued cyber advisories urging government staff to avoid sharing classified or highly sensitive information through messaging apps.

Cybersecurity specialists advise users to take basic precautions. These include never sharing 6-digit verification codes or security PINs, avoiding unknown QR codes or suspicious links, enabling 2-step verification in messaging apps, and reviewing logged-in devices if any unusual activity is noticed.

Experts say cybercriminals are increasingly focusing on tricking users rather than breaking systems. In this evolving threat landscape, awareness and caution remain the strongest defense against such cyber attacks.
