Engineer to Green Entrepreneur: How Gyan Shetty and His Mother Cultivated a Thriving Terrace Garden Business

In the coastal city of Mangaluru, 28-year-old Gyan Shetty made a remarkable shift from a corporate engineer to a passionate gardener, transforming his home into a verdant sanctuary housing over 3,000 plants. Together with his mother, Shobha, he co-founded ‘Namma Garden,’ an online nursery that offers a rich collection of plants, from common fruit saplings to exotic flowers—all nurtured with pure “organic love.”

What began as a childhood pastime, helping his mother tend to the garden, gradually grew into a lifelong devotion. Initially, Gyan found joy in simple play, splashing water while his mother worked, but with time, he developed a profound respect for the delicate wonders of nature. A cherished memory captures this journey: “There was a big plumeria tree on my nani’s lawn. I once took a stem from it and planted it on our terrace. Later, it was replanted near our home and now stands tall as a full-grown tree,” Gyan recalls.

Despite completing his engineering degree and spending three years in the corporate world, the call of the garden remained irresistible. The COVID-19 lockdown gave him the perfect opportunity to fully immerse himself in gardening. As his mother stepped back, Gyan took the reins and shared his lush world through social media. The response was heartening—plant enthusiasts from cities like Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Hyderabad flooded him with orders and support. This momentum led to the official launch of Namma Garden in January 2022 on a small plot near his residence.

Namma Garden today offers a wide range of plants, including indoor flowering varieties, ornamental greenery, water plants, and an impressive selection of fruit trees such as mango, jackfruit, rambutan, and pomegranate.

Guided by his mother’s wisdom and his own newfound passion, Gyan embodies the harmony between purpose and nature. His simple, inspiring message resonates deeply: “If you have a little passion, you can grow a whole forest!” Through every leaf unfurling and flower blooming, Gyan’s story stands as living proof of this truth.
