Gurugram cyber police bring 450 citizens into Cyber Marshal network

Community participation is becoming a key pillar in Gurugram’s fight against online fraud, with city police enrolling nearly 450 residents under the Cyber Marshals initiative.

According to officials, the programme was launched earlier this year to curb cybercrime and spread awareness among the public. The initiative was recently discussed at a city level dialogue hosted by a leading media organisation, which saw participation from residents welfare associations, senior police officials, and road safety experts. During the interaction, police officials reaffirmed their focus on reducing cybercrime through awareness and citizen involvement.

Priyanshu Dewan, assistant commissioner of police for cybercrime, said around 450 residents are currently active as Cyber Marshals. “Through this group, we regularly share messages on combating cybercrime and raising awareness. One resident from each society participates and then disseminates the information to other members and residents in their area,” he said.

Dewan highlighted that senior citizens are among the most vulnerable targets for cybercrime. “It is crucial to educate them on the dos and don’ts, and this initiative was launched to reach them. Through these regular messages, we aim to keep residents informed and aware about cybercrime,” he added.

Police officials said the programme is open to all residents and members of residents welfare associations. Interested individuals can join the Cyber Marshal group by calling the cybercrime helpline number 1930 or by connecting through social media platforms.

Rajeev Bajaj, a member of the residents welfare association in DLF Phase 1, said the initiative plays a strong preventive role. “Many people are tech savvy and own multiple gadgets, yet they still fall prey to cybercrime. It is therefore important to educate residents and locals on how to avoid such traps,” he said.

Officials added that the Cyber Marshal initiative also includes regular awareness drives and workshops in housing societies and residential areas. These sessions focus on safe online behaviour, common cybercrime techniques, and ways to protect personal data.

Dewan said public alertness and cooperation have helped reduce cyber fraud cases in the city. “It is important for every resident to know that in cases of cybercrime, they should immediately call the helpline number 1930 or submit their complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal for swift action,” he said.

He also noted that Gurugram has 4 dedicated cybercrime police stations located in Palam Vihar, Sector 8, Sector 14, and Sector 59.
