Gujarat Sees Over ₹2 Crore Extortion in 4 Digital Crime Cases Monthly

Gujarat is facing a significant rise in high-value digital crime cases, with an average of four cases every month involving extortion of ₹2 crore or more. Data for the first seven months of the current year (January to July) reveals that 29 such cybercrime incidents have been registered across the state.

These alarming figures highlight the increasing sophistication of cybercriminals targeting individuals and businesses in Gujarat. The nature of these high-value frauds often involves elaborate schemes designed to psychologically manipulate victims into transferring substantial sums of money.

One recent and prominent example is the case of a woman doctor from Gujarat who was defrauded of a staggering ₹19.25 crore over three months (March to June) in a “digital arrest” scam. In this meticulously planned fraud, imposters claiming to be from the Department of Telecommunications, police, and public prosecutors coerced her into believing she was involved in money laundering. She was forced to break fixed deposits, sell jewelry and property, and pledge gold to transfer funds to 35 different bank accounts. One suspect has been arrested in Surat in connection with this case, with ₹1 crore traced to his account.

Another instance involved a Gujarat-based businessman who was arrested after ₹1 crore of defrauded funds was traced to his account. He allegedly offered his company’s account to cybercrime gangs for a commission.

These incidents underscore the pervasive threat of cybercrime and the evolving tactics used by fraudsters. Authorities are working to dismantle these networks, with investigations often revealing links to international gangs, including those operating from Cambodia.

The Gujarat police continue to urge citizens to exercise extreme caution against unsolicited calls, messages, and investment schemes that promise unrealistic returns. They advise verifying the authenticity of any official-sounding demands and immediately reporting suspicious activities to the cybercrime helpline.
