Gujarat police cybercrime registered 24,599 online fraud complaints in just 58 days of 2025

The Gujarat police cybercrime helpline has received 24,599 online fraud reports in just 58 days of 2025, which is a concerning phenomenon. This means that 424 Gujaratis are being tricked by cybercriminals per day.

These tales are mostly about financial scams, when scammers skillfully take advantage of Gujaratis’ well-known desire for lucrative investments. The figures demonstrate the extent to which cybercriminals have impacted daily transactions, from fraudulent investment schemes to phantom shopping platforms.

Identity theft leads the pack

Fake identity schemes are the main tool in hackers’ toolbox, according to police data, with 6,438 cases—or around 111 victims per day. Scammers use phony websites and misleading messaging to get money and personal information. Many use fake identities and stolen images to establish romantic relationships, ultimately convincing victims to send money.

Stock market swindles snare investors

With 2,134 complaints, investment-related scams come in second, with over 43 Gujaratis becoming victims every day. Before disappearing with large quantities of money, scammers lure victims into investing in stocks that don’t exist by promising them enormous profits.

Digital shopping nightmares

With 2,501 complaints, the e-commerce boom has made it easier for scammers to operate. Phantasmal shopping websites, deceptive ads, and phony delivery notifications requesting extra money for items that never come are some examples of tactics.

Faux government schemes

Scammers impersonating government representatives have taken advantage of the public’s faith in official programs in 1,004 alarming situations. The victims are tricked into divulging private information or paying fake registration fees for advantages that don’t exist.

Digital extortion’s rising menace

With 67 incidents reported—roughly two victims every day—the rise of digital arrest frauds is arguably the most alarming. During video conversations, criminals pose as senior police officials and threaten vulnerable citizens—especially women and the elderly—with false criminal accusations unless they pay “settlement fees.”

Entertainment industry exploited

There have been 1,105 complaints regarding fraudulent ticket bookings, indicating that even leisure activities are affected. In order to collect money for fictitious tickets and to capture personal information, criminals use fake portals for booking movies, events, and flights.

Authority speaks

DIG (State Cyber Crime) Dharmendra Sharma emphasises the need for vigilance: “Cyber criminals are evolving their methods daily, taking advantage of people’s habits- be it online shopping, investing, or booking tickets. It’s crucial for citizens to stay vigilant and verify before making any transactions.”
