Gujarat Police Crack Down Cyber Criminal Network Involved in Massive CCTV Hacking in 20 States

Ahmedabad: Gujarat police has successfully dismantled a cybercriminal network that illegally accessed around 50,000 CCTV cameras across 20 states, as reported by Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Sunday. The Home Minister commended the Gujarat police unit for their effective action against the cybercriminals.

Officials indicated that the gang took advantage of weaknesses in CCTV systems, potentially using them for illegal activities such as surveillance, extortion, and data theft. The Gujarat Police responded quickly upon discovering the cyber breach, conducting a thorough investigation that resulted in several arrests and the filing of cases in multiple locations. The State Home Minister highlighted the significance of cybersecurity and vigilance in today’s digital landscape.

“The unit’s diligent efforts have led to the registration of multiple cases in various areas, bringing the perpetrators to justice. Hats off to the Gujarat Police Cyber Crime Ahmedabad for their tireless work in keeping our communities safe!”  he stated on his social media account X.

In a troubling incident that raises significant concerns about patient privacy and cybersecurity, explicit videos of women undergoing medical examinations at Rajkot’s Payal Maternity Home have appeared online.

These videos, allegedly recorded through the hospital’s CCTV system, were unlawfully uploaded to a YouTube channel and shared in a Telegram group, where access was sold for fees between Rs 999 and Rs 1,500. The Gujarat Police Cyber Crime Unit launched an investigation after the videos began to circulate on social media.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Cyber Crime) Hardik Makadia disclosed that the suspects had formed a Telegram group associated with a YouTube channel for the video uploads, enticing members to pay a subscription fee for access to the explicit content, using screen grabs for promotion.

In response to the breach, the hospital’s director, Dr Amit Akbari, claimed that their CCTV server had been hacked. He expressed uncertainty about how the footage was leaked and assured full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation. (IANS)
