Elon Musk’s Grok Imagine AI tool can now turn still images into short videos

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI has introduced a major update to its Grok AI model, adding a new feature that allows users to animate still images into short videos in just a few simple steps.

“Long press on any image to turn it into a video! Then customise the prompt to create whatever you can imagine,” Musk said in a post on X on Sunday, November 9. He shared an example created with the new tool — a video generated from a still image of a girl, guided by the prompt: “She smiles and says, ‘I will always love you.’” The result showed a realistic AI-generated woman speaking those words in a synthetic voice against a rainy street backdrop.

The new feature is powered by Grok Imagine, xAI’s latest photo and video generation tool. Grok AI is integrated with Musk’s social media platform X, allowing users to directly interact with AI tools and share generated content on the platform.

Following Musk’s announcement, users began experimenting with the feature, posting their own AI-generated clips on X. Musk also shared another example featuring an AI-generated version of actress Sydney Sweeney saying, “You are so cringe.”

Similar tools have been launched by other technology companies, including Adobe, whose Firefly AI model offers image-to-video capabilities for converting still images or illustrations into motion videos.

Recently, xAI announced that Grok 4 would be available free of cost to all users globally. However, free users have limited daily prompts and queries. Subscribers to xAI’s Premium or Premium+ plans receive additional benefits, including faster responses, extended context lengths, and access to an advanced mode known as “SuperGrok.”

With Grok Imagine, xAI joins the growing list of AI innovators transforming static images into dynamic, lifelike visuals — marking another step forward in the evolution of generative AI.
