Grammarly Introduces AI Agents to Support Students and Professionals in Writing

Grammarly has announced a major expansion of its services with the launch of eight new AI agents designed to support students and professionals. Moving beyond its traditional role as a grammar checker, the company is positioning itself as a complete academic and workplace writing partner. The new agents have been introduced within “docs”, Grammarly’s AI-native writing platform powered by Coda technology. These tools aim to assist users at every stage of the writing process, from drafting to review.

Grammarly CEO Shishir Mehrotra said, “We created many of these agents with students in mind because they’re the first generation entering a job market where employers expect both subject expertise and AI fluency. These agents help with everything from finding credible sources to predicting reader reactions.”

Among the new tools, the AI grader stands out for its ability to evaluate a student’s paper against the assignment rubric and provide professor-like feedback. It can also predict the grade a student may receive, giving them the chance to improve their work before submission.

Jenny Maxwell, Head of Grammarly for Education, explained that the tools are designed to enhance learning without replacing it. She said, “Students today need AI that enhances their capabilities without undermining their learning. By teaching students how to work effectively with AI now, we’re preparing them for a workplace where AI literacy will be essential.”

Several other agents focus on targeted aspects of writing. The reader reactions agent forecasts potential questions or concerns from readers, helping users strengthen their arguments. The proofreader agent provides in-line writing suggestions, while the paraphrase agent adapts language to fit different tones, audiences, and styles.

For research-focused assignments, the citation finder agent automatically creates properly formatted references to support claims. The expert review agent delivers topic-specific feedback to improve the depth and accuracy of essays.

Grammarly has also developed tools for educators. The plagiarism checker agent reviews academic papers, websites and published works to highlight similarities, while the AI detector agent estimates the likelihood that text was generated by AI. These two tools are currently available to Grammarly Pro users and will be expanded to Enterprise and Education users later this year along with other new agents.

All eight agents are being introduced at no additional cost for Free and Pro Grammarly users, giving millions of students and professionals immediate access to advanced AI-powered writing assistance.

The CEO described this update as “just the beginning” of Grammarly’s journey into AI agents, with more specialised tools planned for the future as the company looks to integrate deeper into academic and professional workflows.
