Grammarly, the widely recognized writing assistance company, has announced its acquisition of Superhuman, an American startup celebrated for its AI-powered email application. While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, the move signals Grammarly’s strategic push to expand its offerings into a broader artificial intelligence-powered productivity suite and diversify its business.
Superhuman, which was last valued at $825 million in 2021 and currently generates approximately $35 million in annual revenue, gained a reputation as an exclusive email tool with a lengthy waitlist for new users. The acquisition comes on the heels of Grammarly’s recent $1 billion funding round led by General Catalyst, providing the company with significant capital for strategic growth initiatives.
As part of the acquisition, Superhuman CEO Rahul Vohra will join Grammarly, along with over 100 Superhuman employees. Grammarly has confirmed that the Superhuman product, team, and brand will continue to operate, with plans to integrate Grammarly’s AI-powered agents directly into the Superhuman experience.
Grammarly CEO Shashir Mehrotra emphasized the enduring importance of email in professional workflows. “Email continues to be the dominant communication tool in the world. Professionals spend about three hours a day in their inboxes. It is by far the most popular work application, the foundation of any productivity suite,” Mehrotra stated, adding that “Superhuman is a clear leader in this space.”
The integration aims to provide users with a network of specialized AI agents that can collect data from various digital workflows, including emails and documents, thereby reducing the time spent searching for information or crafting responses. Superhuman CEO Rahul Vohra noted that the deal will grant his company “significantly greater resources” to invest further in AI development and expand into areas like calendaring, tasks, and broader collaboration tools.
This acquisition positions Grammarly to compete more directly in the increasingly crowded AI-powered productivity tools market, alongside tech giants like Salesforce and a wave of new startups.
