The Centre has established seven joint cyber coordination teams to improve collaboration among various law enforcement agencies addressing cyber crimes and hotspots, as reported to the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
Union Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar noted that the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has actively identified and blocked over 3,962 Skype IDs and 83,668 WhatsApp accounts involved in digital crimes.
He mentioned that law enforcement agencies have also blocked more than 781,000 SIM cards and 208,469 IMEIs associated with digital frauds as of February 28 this year. The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) is a unique identifier assigned to each mobile device.
The seven joint cyber coordination teams have been set up for Mewat, Jamtara, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Vishakhapatnam, and Guwahati under I4C, targeting areas with significant cyber crime issues and multi-jurisdictional challenges by involving states and Union territories to strengthen the coordination framework among their law enforcement agencies, Kumar explained in response to a written inquiry.
The minister also highlighted the launch of the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System under I4C in 2021, aimed at facilitating immediate reporting of financial frauds and preventing the diversion of funds by criminals.
To date, over Rs. 4,386 crore has been saved from more than 1.336 million complaints. A toll-free helpline, 1930, has been set up to assist individuals in filing online cyber complaints, Kumar added.
Additionally, he announced the introduction of a suspect registry for cyber criminals by I4C on September 10, 2024, in partnership with banks and financial institutions. So far, over 800,000 suspect records and more than 2 million mule accounts have been shared with participating entities, resulting in savings of over Rs. 2,889 crore.
