In a shocking case of cyber fraud from Raipur, Chhattisgarh, a senior woman officer of the Directorate of Economics and Statistics has reportedly been cheated out of nearly ₹90 lakh by a fraudster posing as a Facebook friend.
The victim, Deputy Director Maya Tiwari, became friends with a woman using the name Zara Ali Khan on Facebook. What started as casual online chats turned into a serious financial scam. The accused convinced officer to invest in an online trading platform called Bull Markets Your Gateways, promising high returns.
Police sources said that the fraudster used emotional tactics to gain officer’s trust and slowly convinced her to transfer large sums of money. Over time, officer sent more than ₹90 lakh in several transactions to different bank accounts connected to the so-called trading company.
As doubts began to arise, Officer asked for her money back. However, the fraudster refused to return the amount, leading Tiwari to realise that she had been scammed. She then filed a complaint at the local police station.
Rakhi Police Station in Raipur has registered a case against unknown persons under relevant cybercrime sections. Investigators are now tracking the bank accounts and social media profiles linked to the incident.
Officials have confirmed that cyber fraud cases are rising rapidly in Chhattisgarh. During the recent monsoon session of the State Assembly, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma stated that cyber frauds worth more than ₹107 crore have been reported in the state over the past 18 months.
To tackle this growing problem, the state government has started forming special cyber cells in every district. These units aim to boost both the speed and effectiveness of cybercrime investigations.
This incident serves as a reminder that even educated and experienced individuals, including senior government officers, can fall prey to online scams.
