Union home minister Amit Shah told troops at a Border Security Force (BSF) station in Jammu on Monday that the government is implementing an electronic monitoring system and other technical efforts to protect the nation’s borders.
He said that two types of electronic surveillance systems have already been designed for deployment on the border and that more than 26 technology efforts, such as tunnel detection and anti-drone systems, are presently being tested. “After their installation across the entire border, soldiers will find it much easier to receive information and respond immediately to any actions by the enemy using technology,” Shah said.
He said that technology will be utilized to locate and destroy underground cross-border tunnels along the International Border that terrorists are exploiting to enter Indian territory.
He stated that security troops stationed along the whole India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh border will receive complete technology support in a few years.
In addition to meeting with the families of the police officers who were killed in Jammu, the home minister, who is on a three-day visit to the region for the first time since an elected government took office in October of last year, also gave appointment letters to nine candidates on compassionate grounds. When he reaches maturity, he encouraged the J&K government to take proactive measures for the compassionate appointment of 12-year-old Yuvraj Singh, son of selection grade constable Jaswant Singh who died while performing his job.
Shah arrived at the BSF outpost “Vinay,” which is close to the International Border in the Hiranagar area of Kathua, earlier in the day. He was greeted by top personnel, including J&K DGP Nalin Prabhat and BSF director general Daljit Singh Chaudhary. Assistant Commandant Vinay Prasad, who was killed by a sniper on January 15, 2019, as he and his patrol team were conducting a border dominance exercise near the International Border, is honored by the outpost’s name.
Shah’s visit coincides with security forces’ intense two-week-long operation in Kathua against a gang of terrorists said to have recently crossed the border.
Shah also officially opened recently constructed infrastructure near the border, including as high-mast lighting and eight women’s dormitories.
Praising the border guarding force’s glorious history, he said: “The entire nation knows that the BSF is our first line of defence, and the force has always performed this responsibility exceptionally well… In every war with Pakistan, the contribution of our BSF soldiers has been as significant as that of the Army.”
Shah arrived at the Srinagar airport on Monday night with LG Manoj Sinha, and CM Omar Abdullah met him there.
Shah paid a visit to the family of DSP Humayun Bhat, 32, who was one of four cops slain on September 13, 2023, in Kokernag, south Kashmir, after a confrontation with militants. Tight security measures are in place throughout the Kashmir Valley in anticipation of Shah’s visit.
