Government steps back from compulsory Sanchar Saathi app installation

The Government has decided to withdraw its earlier rule that required smartphone makers to include the Sanchar Saathi app on all new devices. The change comes at a time when the app is seeing a steady rise in voluntary downloads and wider acceptance among mobile users across the country.

Officials explained that Sanchar Saathi is designed only as a safety tool to help people identify and report cyber fraud. They also confirmed that the app does not carry out any activity other than offering user protection, and anyone who installs it can remove it whenever they choose.

The app has already reached 1.4 crore downloads and is helping generate alerts for nearly 2000 online fraud cases each day. In the last 24 hours, the government recorded an unexpected surge of interest with 6 lakh new registrations, which is ten times higher than the usual number.

The earlier mandate was introduced to make sure that even users with limited digital awareness could easily access the safety features of the app. With the recent rise in public trust and adoption, officials now believe that mandatory installation is no longer required. The focus will continue to remain on promoting awareness around cyber safety and encouraging people to use tools that can protect them online.

The ministry added that this shift shows the spirit of “Jan Bhagidari” or citizens’ participation in fighting cybercrime and protecting digital communication.
