The Indian government is currently investigating Grok, the AI chatbot owned by Elon Musk’s X, as reported by Media. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has identified instances where Grok, which operates within X, has used Hindi slang and offensive language in its responses. The ministry is looking into the reasons behind this behavior.
Grok, created by Musk’s AI firm xAI in 2023, was intended to serve as an alternative to well-known AI models like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. It has gained popularity among Indian social media users for its tendency to use unfiltered language and slang when provoked.
The controversy began when an X user posted their interaction with Grok, where the chatbot responded with Hindi expletives after being provoked. The user inquired about their “10 best mutuals” and, after not receiving a prompt reply, resorted to harsh language. Grok responded in kind, telling the user to “chill kar,” which means “calm down” in English.
Grok’s unrestricted approach, allowing for uncensored AI interactions, distinguishes it from other chatbots like ChatGPT, which typically avoid controversial subjects. This distinctive characteristic has ignited discussions regarding the quality of the datasets used to train these AI language models and the necessity for some form of regulation or oversight.
