Amid rising concerns over cooking gas supply and distribution efficiency, the central government has introduced mandatory biometric Aadhaar authentication for all domestic LPG users. The move requires consumers to complete electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) verification to ensure uninterrupted access to LPG services.
Under the directive issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, consumers must complete Biometric Aadhaar Authentication using official platforms. This can be done through the mobile applications of respective Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) along with the Aadhaar FaceRD app. Authorities have urged users to complete the process at the earliest or seek assistance from LPG distributors and official portals to avoid any disruption in supply.
The decision comes at a time when several regions have reported LPG shortages and delays in cylinder deliveries. Ongoing global energy market uncertainties have added pressure on domestic supply chains, leading to instances where households faced delays or paid extra to secure refills. The government aims to address these issues by ensuring that available supply is efficiently distributed to verified and genuine consumers.
Officials believe that linking LPG accounts with Aadhaar-based biometric data will reduce duplication, misuse and irregularities in the system. It is also expected to improve transparency in subsidy allocation and strengthen monitoring of distribution networks. Aadhaar, which stores demographic and biometric data such as fingerprints and iris scans, is already widely used across government services. By integrating it with LPG services, the government aims to enhance identity verification and improve the overall efficiency of the distribution framework.
