In an effort to improve efficiency and reduce delays in healthcare insurance, the government is encouraging the development of technology-led solutions to automate claims processing under Ayushman Bharat.
The National Health Authority, under the Union health ministry, is organising an Auto-Adjudication Hackathon focused on building scalable tools to simplify how claims are assessed and settled under Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana. The initiative aims to address delays and improve transparency, which are critical for building trust among hospitals and beneficiaries.
According to a public notice issued by the National Medical Commission, the hackathon will focus on creating automated systems capable of handling large volumes of claims while maintaining accuracy and compliance. The government event will conclude with a 2-day offline finale at Indian Institute of Science on May 8 and 9, where shortlisted teams will present their solutions. Registrations are open from March 31 to April 13.
In its notice, the National Medical Commission said, “All medical colleges and institutions are advised to disseminate information about the hackathon among stakeholders and encourage participation of researchers, innovators and professionals from academic and professional networks.”
Experts believe that automating claims adjudication can significantly reduce processing time, minimise manual errors, and improve transparency—key challenges in large-scale public health insurance programmes.
The event is expected to bring together policymakers, healthcare leaders, technology experts, and startups. Senior officials, including Sunil Kumar Barnwal, and industry leaders such as Devi Prasad Shetty, will participate in the opening session.
On the second day, discussions will focus on the future of claims adjudication, including the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare and the need for regulatory safeguards to ensure responsible deployment.
