Government Asks E-Commerce Companies to Join Sahyog Portal for Better Cybercrime Coordination

The central government has called on major e-commerce platforms to voluntarily join the Sahyog portal to strengthen coordination on cybercrime and unlawful online content. The portal is managed by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, under the Ministry of Commerce, sent a letter dated 4 August to companies such as Amazon, Flipkart and Myntra, urging them to register on the portal. This follows an earlier outreach by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre on 29 July.

Launched in 2024, the Sahyog portal aims to bring digital platforms and government agencies together on a single interface for quicker enforcement. It allows designated agencies to issue notices under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, which authorises the government to instruct IT intermediaries to remove illegal online content.

The portal improves response times and helps streamline the legal process for removing harmful or unlawful content from the internet.

In recent updates submitted to the Karnataka High Court, the government disclosed that 38 intermediaries, including Google, Microsoft, Telegram and Amazon Web Services, have already been integrated into the Sahyog portal.

Meta is currently testing onboarding through API-based integration. Additionally, more than 45 cryptocurrency exchanges have joined the platform, showing growing industry participation.

The government’s push for broader participation highlights the importance of a coordinated approach in tackling the growing threat of online crime.
