Government approves quantum labs in 23 institutions to boost research and training

In a move to strengthen India’s capabilities in emerging technologies, new steps have been taken to expand quantum research and education across the country.

Under the National Quantum Mission, the Union government has approved the establishment of quantum teaching facilities or laboratories in 23 academic institutions across India. Additionally, 100 more institutions are currently under consideration to further support advanced research and training in quantum technologies.

The development was shared during a joint monthly meeting of secretaries from science ministries and departments. The meeting was led by Jitendra Singh and attended by Ajay Kumar Sood. Discussions focused on key scientific programmes, upcoming national events, and improving coordination among various science departments.

Updates from the space sector were also reviewed. Preparations for the next PSLV mission, expected later this year, were discussed along with upcoming satellite launches. Plans to launch the next navigation satellite for the Navy around May were also highlighted, aimed at strengthening India’s space-based navigation and strategic capabilities.

The meeting further covered plans for National Technology Day celebrations on May 11. A large technology exhibition is scheduled to be held in New Delhi from May 11 to 13. The event is expected to bring together over 3,000 stakeholders and showcase more than 500 technologies and innovations from national research organisations and startups. It will serve as a platform for industry collaboration and technology commercialisation.

In addition, discussions were held on revising manpower guidelines for project staff involved in scientific research. The Department of Science and Technology is reviewing updates to the existing 2020 guidelines to align them with norms under the Anusandhan National Research Foundation framework, ensuring consistency across departments.

This initiative reflects a broader push to strengthen India’s scientific ecosystem and future-ready research capabilities.
