The government has reiterated its commitment to making Graphics Processing Units available at very affordable rates so that students, researchers and innovators can train AI models and build new solutions. Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Jitin Prasada shared this vision during an AI impact festival in the national capital on Tuesday.
He said that India has the best talent in the world and highlighted the government’s aim to democratize AI. “The intent of the government is very clear. We want this AI for all. We want it to transcend to the technology should be democratized. The AI should be for all. And that access about skilling, training our students, making them bear what the future has,” he said.
Since its launch in 2024, the IndiaAI Mission has expanded the country’s computing capacity at a rapid pace. Against an initial target of 10000 GPUs, India now has around 38000 GPUs available, giving affordable access to high quality AI resources. A GPU is a powerful chip that helps machines process information faster, run AI programs and handle complex tasks more efficiently than regular processors.
The IndiaAI Mission along with Centres of Excellence for AI is driving the shift towards an AI empowered future. AI enables machines to perform tasks that normally need human intelligence by learning from data, identifying patterns and generating meaningful responses.
The Union Cabinet approved the IndiaAI Mission in March 2024 with a budget of ₹10371.92 crore for five years. The initiative is guided by the vision of Making AI in India and Making AI Work for India.
Jitin Prasada said the government is working to make GPU compute available at very low rates but acknowledged that some users still find it expensive. He urged all stakeholders including students and researchers to share suggestions that can help shape better policies. He added that the government does not want to over regulate AI and aims to give innovators and researchers the freedom to build without unnecessary restrictions.
