Google upgrades Veo 3.1 with vertical video support and stronger creative tools

Google has upgraded its Veo 3.1 artificial intelligence model with new features and better instruction understanding. The update focuses on improving the Ingredients to Video feature, which allows users to add one or more reference images to create videos. According to the company, the update delivers better character and background consistency while making it easier to get the desired result without writing long and detailed prompts.

The biggest addition is native support for vertical videos in a 9:16 format. This means users can now directly upload content to YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels, and TikTok without cropping or losing quality.

In a blog post, the company shared details about the latest changes. The improvements bring Veo 3.1 closer to other popular video generation tools that focus on strong prompt following and consistent characters. This update also improves how the model uses reference images and videos.

Veo 3.1 includes the Ingredients to Video feature, which allows users to turn images into videos using short text prompts for guidance. Users can upload one or more images and ask the model to include them in the story. Google says this feature is now more accurate and flexible.

The company claims the model can now understand shorter prompts while still delivering “richer dialogue and storytelling.” In one example, the prompt “Documentary style, a raccoon manages a coffee shop, dialogue” along with an image of a raccoon generated a cinematic clip showing the animal running a coffee shop and talking to customers.

Character consistency has also been improved. This means a character’s appearance and facial details stay the same across scenes. This makes it easier to connect multiple clips into a longer story. The update also improves consistency in backgrounds, objects, and textures. Users can reuse these elements across scenes and combine different ideas into a single video.

Google has also improved 1080p quality and added 4K upscaling for larger screens.

The Ingredients to Video feature is now rolling out to YouTube Shorts and the YouTube Create app. It is also available in the Gemini app. For businesses and developers, Veo 3.1 can be accessed through the Flow app, the Gemini API, Vertex AI, and Google Vids, although Google Vids does not support 1080p or 4K output.
