Google updates Gmail for Android notifications with clearer attachment previews

Google is introducing a new update to Gmail for Android that changes how email notifications appear when an attachment is included. Until now, Gmail alerts on Android only showed the sender’s name, the subject and a short preview of the message. A report from a common source states that the latest update adds clearer visual cues so that attached files, especially photos, are easier to identify from the notification shade.

In the new layout, a paperclip symbol appears at the beginning of the subject line to show that the email has an attachment. When the attachment is a photo, the profile image that earlier appeared on the right side is replaced with a small thumbnail. This allows users to recognise images quickly without opening Gmail.

When users expand the notification, they see a larger rectangular preview similar to previews offered in messaging apps. In this expanded view, Gmail now highlights the attachment preview above the body text of the email.

If an email includes multiple images, Gmail displays additional thumbnails in a row below the main preview. For attachments that are not images, such as documents or PDFs, Gmail shows a labelled pill with part of the file name. The paperclip symbol also remains visible in the collapsed notification.

In related news, Google has upgraded its Nano Banana image generator to “Nano Banana Pro”, which is powered by the Gemini three Pro Image model. The updated version creates clearer visuals, sharper multilingual text and richer graphics, including diagrams and infographics. It also offers more consistent image creation and supports up to fourteen blended inputs while keeping multiple subjects intact. Users also get new creative controls, including region based edits, advanced lighting tools and high resolution output.

Nano Banana Pro is rolling out globally across Google AI. Free users will have limited access, while Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers will receive higher generation limits. The model will also be available in Workspace apps, Search AI Mode in the United States and NotebookLM.
