Managing a Gmail identity may soon become far more flexible for users around the world. Google has quietly updated its support documentation, revealing plans to let users change their Gmail address while keeping their existing account, data and services fully intact.
The technology company based in Mountain View has confirmed that users will be able to edit the part of their email address that appears before @gmail.com. The Google account itself will remain the same, ensuring contacts, Drive files, emails and photos are not affected. Until now, only third-party email addresses could be changed, while Gmail users were required to delete their old address and create a new account.
According to the updated support page, the new option will be “gradually rolling out” and will be available through Google Account settings. “If you’d like, you can change your Google Account email address that ends in gmail.com to a new email address that ends in gmail.com,” the page states. Once selected, the old Gmail address will act as an alias. Emails sent to it will still reach the inbox and users can sign in using either address. Access to services such as Gmail, Drive, YouTube and Maps will continue without interruption.
Google has also outlined limits and precautions tied to the feature. Users will be able to change their Gmail address once every 12 months, with a maximum of 3 changes allowed, resulting in up to 4 addresses linked to a single account. The old address will remain reserved and cannot be claimed by another user. The company warned that some services may need additional setup, particularly for Chromebook users, Google Convenience sign in and Remote Desktop. Google advised backing up data and reviewing app settings, adding that “It’s just like signing in on a new device.”
