The new AI Mode utilizes Google’s tailored version of Gemini 2.0, enabling it to comprehend more intricate queries than ever before.
Users can engage with the search application in a conversational manner, similar to a dialogue between two individuals. They can pose follow-up questions and provide additional context to their inquiries. Based on the request, the AI Mode will supply accurate information.
Search results will feature links to sources and images integrated within the text.
Additionally, it will present a Knowledge Graph, real-world information, and shopping data for billions of products. Google’s sophisticated quality and ranking systems ensure that information comes from credible sources. Gemini 2.0 will present answers in a straightforward manner, making it accessible for all age groups.
Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, explained that it employs a “query fan-out” technique, conducting multiple related searches simultaneously across various data sources and consolidating those results to offer a clear response. This method allows users to access a wider range of information compared to a traditional Google search.
However, if the Google Search app struggles to verify the authenticity of a source link and has lower confidence in its usefulness and quality, it will return a set of generic web search results, similar to what is currently available to all users.
The experimental AI Mode search feature is currently accessible in the US. Later this week, only Google One AI Premium subscribers will be able to use AI mode through Search Labs. For those unfamiliar, Google Search Labs is a program that allows users to test new Google Search features and provide feedback. Like the AI Overview testing, the company is looking for input from public testers. If any issues arise, they will address the bugs and expand AI Mode to more users globally later this year.
