Google Translate Introduces Gemini AI Features For Real-Time Conversations And Language Learning

Google has announced new artificial intelligence powered features for its Translate app on both Android and iOS, aiming to make it more than just a translation tool. Using its Gemini AI models, the company is introducing two new functions: Live Translate for real-time conversations and a practice feature designed to help users learn new languages, much like Duolingo.

The update is currently available in beta in select regions including India, Mexico, and the United States.

Live Translate

The first feature, Live Translate, allows two people who speak different languages to have a natural conversation. When users open the Translate app, a new “Live translate” icon appears at the bottom left. By tapping it, they can set the languages, turn on the microphone, and begin speaking. The app will instantly process the speech and show it both in the original language and the translated version.

For easier conversations, a message bubble icon at the top opens a two-way layout so both speakers can view translations at the same time. Google says this feature uses AI to detect pauses, accents, and intonations to provide smooth and accurate translations.

Practice Language Learning

The second feature transforms Google Translate into a language learning coach. A new “practice” option lets users take part in personalised listening and speaking sessions that adapt to their skill level. “These interactive practices are generated on-the-fly and intelligently adapt to your skill level,” the company explained.

Users can choose beginner or advanced practice, listen to conversations, tap the words they hear to improve comprehension, or practice speaking with guidance. According to Google, the exercises were developed in collaboration with language experts and are based on recent studies in language acquisition.

With these additions, Google Translate is evolving from a simple translation service into a powerful tool for global communication and learning, combining real-time conversations with interactive practice sessions.
