Google to Acquire Windsurf’s Technology in $2.4 Billion Licensing Deal

Google has reportedly agreed to pay around $2.4 billion to license the technology behind Windsurf, an artificial intelligence-powered coding tool, according to media, which cited sources familiar with the matter.

As part of the deal, Google is also bringing key talent from the startup into its fold. On Friday, a Google spokesperson confirmed to media that Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and selected members of the company’s research and development team have joined Google’s DeepMind division. This move is seen as a strategic step to strengthen Google’s position in the competitive AI landscape.

Windsurf has been gaining attention for its advanced AI-assisted coding capabilities, and Google’s acquisition highlights the growing importance of such tools in the tech industry. The move also reflects a broader trend among major tech firms racing to integrate cutting-edge AI into their services.

The deal is one of the latest in a series of high-profile investments made by leading technology companies to gain an edge in artificial intelligence. By integrating Windsurf’s technology and talent into DeepMind, Google is aiming to further enhance its AI research and development capabilities.

Media report did not specify when the deal was finalized or when the Windsurf team officially joined Google, but the development is expected to significantly boost Google’s AI projects going forward.
